Andrew Robert Makey, 44, died unexpectedly on July 12, 2024. He was born on March 16, 1980, in Des Moines, to Jim and Betty (Sewell) Makey. His early years were spent in Holstein and Pender, Neb. His grade school years were in Earlham. He went to junior high and senior high school at Logan-Magnolia. Upon graduation from high school in 1998, Andy enlisted in the Marine Corps, where he became a Scout Sniper and achieved the rank of Corporal. He returned to the Logan area for several years. In recent years he lived in Ironwood, Mich. before returning to Harrison County where he resided and worked in Woodbine.
Andy had a passion for music and the arts. He sang and played guitar at every opportunity, most notably as a member of the band Fork in the Road. While in Ironwood, he owned and operated Time Again Studios, was active at the Historic Ironwood Theater and performed with several music groups. In Woodbine, he was co-chair of the committee for the Regional Performing Arts Center.
Andy was an avid storyteller and always enjoyed a chat with everyone he met. Andy loved being an uncle. He never missed a chance to go fishing or hunting and actively supported the local art scene.
Andy is survived by his parents, Jim and Betty Makey of Ankeny; sisters, Sara (Ben) Wollner of Ankeny and Erin Makey of Portland, Ore.; brother, Patrick (Alicia) Makey of Woodbine; and his nephews and nieces, William, Zoey, Adeline, Ivan and Leo. He will be truly missed by all his family including aunts and uncles, cousins, his Marine Corps brothers and his many friends.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, July 23, 2024, at St. Anne Catholic Church in Logan. Rev. James Kirby presided over the service and the lector was Kris Walski. The gift bearers were Emily Krakau and McKenzie Ghrist. The musicians were Becky Loftus and Andrew and Nicole Walski. The pallbearers were the Logan Magnolia American Legion Post #118 and the Weiss American Legion Post #143. Andy’s final resting place is at the Iowa Veteran’s Cemetery.
