Claribel Johnson, 93

Claribel (Buck) Johnson, 93, died on Saturday, Dec. 5, 2020, at her home in Woodbine. She was born Aug. 21, 1927, to Johanna (Meyer) and John Buck in Hutchinson, Kan. She was raised in Hutchinson until her freshman year in high school. The family then moved to Alameda, Calif. where Claribel graduated from high school in 1945. Claribel married Oscar Johnson on Nov. 19, 1945, at the Methodist Church in Alameda. After Oscar’s honorable discharge from the Navy in 1947, the couple then returned to Woodbine to farm. They purchased their farm in 1950.

Claribel was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Woodbine. She was active with the Methodist Women’s groups and various other committees within the church. She was also a member of the FFW Neighborhood Club. Claribel loved her family and she enjoyed entertaining family and friends.

Claribel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Oscar Johnson, on Apr. 28, 2003; brother, Donald Buck; and two sons-in-law, Donald Robertson and Alan Schwertley. She is survived by her four children, Pam Schwertley of Omaha, Neb., Elaine Robertson and Gary Hill of Kansas City, Mo., David Johnson and his wife Rhonda of Saucier, Miss. and Diane and her husband David Gilmore of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; good friends, Jeff Sinley and his wife Maria of Phoenix, Ariz.; and many other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held on Wednesday, Dec. 9, 2020, at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine. Pastor Regina Harrison presided over the service. Rick Powell sang “Have I Told You Lately That I Love You” and the recorded musical selections were “Green Grass of Home” by Conway Twitty, “Back Home Again” by John Denver and “What A Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong. The honorary pallbearers were Cortny Johnson, John Gilmore, Ben Gilmore, Laura Gilmore, Brian Jensen and Ralph Pauley. The pallbearers were Adam Robertson, Aaron Hansen, Robin Salfrank, Adam Sinley, Chris Johnson, Corbin Robertson and Spencer Johnson. Claribel’s final resting place is at the Woodbine Cemetery.
