COLUMN: Dealing with distractions

Posted

It took me a long time to learn this lesson, but sometimes distractions are a good thing.

Now, work needs to get done and there are things in life that require precision and efficiency, but sometimes the thing that takes you away from what you thought you were supposed to be doing is actually the thing you should have been doing all along.

For instance, I used to think there was nothing worse than a terribly timed phone call from my grandmother. Now, it typically serves as a reminder that I wasn't talking to her enough.

When someone unexpectedly needs my help in any number of circumstances, it can feel like such a drag to stop what I'm doing and go give them my time and effort. But honestly, what better thing is there than to be able to help someone? What better distraction than the camaraderie and care that comes with solving a problem together?

I know I've been guilty of seeing things that are good and beneficial to my life as distractions before. I'm hoping to keep doing less and less of that, and become more and more appreciative of whatever comes my way.

I have no idea what happens next or what tomorrow looks like, if there even is a tomorrow. I should be more grateful for today and all that it gives me. Sometimes the “distraction” is exactly the right prescription to what's ailing us.
