D. Eileen Smith age 96, of Council Bluffs, passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020, at Risen Son Christian Village in Council Bluffs. She was born Feb. 20, 1924, in Council Bluffs, to George L. and Edna (Wohlers) McEldery. Eileen graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1942. She played basketball she was very proud of that, they did very well in the season, they even went to state playoffs. She married Gerald Smith on Dec. 26, 1942, in Blair, Neb. Gerald farmed in Pottawattamie and Harrison County all their married life. Eileen was an avid bowler, belonged to Card Clubs and Dance Clubs all her life. She also was an avid homemaker and helped out at the farm when she was needed. She enjoyed baking, crocheting, long walks, mushroom hunting, like to go to the casinos, she went on yearly vacations with friends. Eileen kept a detailed journal of her life.
Eileen is preceded in death by her parents, husband Gerald Smith, infant daughter, one brother, two sisters.
Survivors include her children Gayle Gorham and husband Sheldon of Greely, Colo., Jerry Smith of Council Bluffs, Steven Smith and wife Marsha of Missouri Valley, ten grandchildren, eighteen great-grandchildren, eleven great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation and funeral service was Saturday Nov. 21, 2020, at Hennessey Funeral Home in Missouri Valley. Funeral Service was for close family members only. Pastor Connie McWilliams officiated. The music selections were “How Great Is Thy Faithfulness” and “Amazing Grace”. Her final resting place will be at Branson Cemetery in Loveland at a later date.
