Joe Louis Swanberg, 86, of Little Sioux, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2022, at his residence.

Avisitation and memorial service were held Sunday, Feb. 20, 2022, at Nealy Hall, Little Sioux, with Reverend Jerald Swanberg officiating. A live stream of the service will be posted on the Goslar Funeral Home website with Joe’s obituary.  Military Honors will be provided by the United States Army and the Little Sioux American Legion Post #410, Little Sioux. Burial will follow in the Little Sioux Cemetery, Little Sioux. Arrangements are under the direction of Goslar Funeral Home and Monuments, Onawa.

Joe Louis was born Dec. 13, 1935, in Little Sioux, the son of Ted and Pearl (Petty) Swanberg. He graduated from Little Sioux High School in 1954. Joe served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged Nov. 9, 1959.

Joe and Alyce Jean Anderson were united into marriage Dec. 20, 1958, in Pisgah. Joe worked with his dad, Ted in Swanberg Trucking and owned and operated his own trucking and custom farming business for 16 years. He then worked for the Harrison County Road Department and retired after thirty-two years. Joe enjoyed working for the county and had many stories of his work buddies.

Joe enjoyed gardening, fishing, wood working, and clock collecting. He had an interest in trees and would grow and plant them around town. Joe loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Survivors include his daughter, Patricia (Craig) Johnson of Colfax; granddaughters, Alyssa Johnson, Abigail (Matt) Martinez, and Molly Johnson; great-grandchildren, Grayson Martinez, and Lina Martinez; sisters, Lavonne Stewart of Missouri Valley, and Gardena Wallis of Little Sioux; brother, Reverend Jerald (Wanda) Swanberg of Ankeny; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his wife, Alyce (Anderson) Swanberg; daughter, Cynthia Jo Swanberg in 1970; his parents, Ted and Pearl (Petty) Swanberg; sisters, Anita (Dwight) Nuzum, Phyllis (Vernon) Christensen, and Wanda (Martin) McColley; and brother, Gene (Violet) Bothwell.
