Marjorie Ruth (Kenkel) Calder, 90, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, July 7, 2024. She was born at home on Aug. 23, 1933, near Dunlap, to Bernard and Caroline (Mumm) Kenkel. She attended St. Joseph Catholic School in Dunlap through the first grade. The family then moved to Woodbine where she finished school, graduating in 1951. After Marge graduated, she worked for Mutual of Omaha in the Medicare Accounting Department until she retired. While working at Mutual of Omaha, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
Marge was very dedicated to her extended family. She helped take care of her nephew Steven when his brother Terrance was sick with cancer. She babysat when needed, took groups of nieces and nephews on family excursions, and provided care for her siblings as they faced a variety of healthcare challenges.
On Oct. 20, 1987, Marge married the love of her life, Michael D. Calder. They resided in Omaha, Neb. They both enjoyed traveling, making trips to Germany, Canada and other locations to visit family members. She attended St. James Catholic Church in Omaha and assisted with funeral dinners after she retired. After retirement, she worked part time for the Creighton Clinic in the business office.
Marge was preceded in death by her parents and seven siblings, Gerald (Fern) Kenkel, Leo (Monica) Kenkel, MaryAnn Kenkel, Donald (Arlene) Kenkel, Bernard Kenkel, Jr., Pauline (Jim) Kaster and Ed Kenkel. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Lee Ann Kenkel of S.C.; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
A Memorial Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Woodbine. Rev. Jim Kirby presided over the service. The musicians were Dan, Cathy and Katie Hayes. The musical selections were “Jesus Remember Me”, “Be Not Afraid”, “Ave Maria”, “Amazing Grace” and “On Eagle’s Wings”. The honorary pallbearers were the late Terrence Kenkel and the late John Kenkel. The pallbearers were Steve Kenkel, Kevin Kenkel, Dan Kenkel, Colin Kenkel, Ron Kenkel, Jeff Kenkel, Phil Kenkel and Nathan Kenkel. Marjorie’s final resting place is at the Woodbine Cemetery.
