Nina Leota (Butts) McHugh, 97, died on Wednesday, Dec. 19, 2024, at her home in Pisgah surrounded by her family. She was born May 30, 1927, to William Parker and Lertie Leota (Weldon) Butts. She was born and raised two miles west of Pisgah and had five sisters, Marie, Edith, Ruby, Joy and Bessie, and two brothers, Dale and Mark. Mark was killed in an accident in 1942, with a team of horses and plow. He was 21 years of age. Nina and Dean were married in Rockport, Mo. on July 29, 1943. The couple farmed and lived on the same farm for 67 years. They moved to Pisgah in 2010. Dean died on Sept. 24, 2011.
Nina was a member of the Community of Christ where she taught Sunday School and was active in the Ladies Aid. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. Nina enjoyed gardening and fishing trips to Minnesota.
Nina was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Dean in 2011; son, Patrick in 2024; siblings, Marie Marten, Edith Andersen, Ruby Gahm, Joy Woodward, Bessie Baumgarner, Dale Butts and Mark Butts. She is survived by her three sons, Lonnie Dean McHugh and his wife Vicki of Pisgah; Timothy Allen McHugh and his wife Debbie of West Liberty and Terry Lee McHugh of Pisgah; daughter-in-law, Mary McHugh of Norfolk, Va.; 10 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and soon to be a great-great-grandmother to baby girls in February and March.
A funeral service was held on Monday, Dec. 23, 2024, at Community of Christ in Pisgah. Pastor Terry McHugh presided over the service. The recorded musical selections were “Old Rugged Cross” and “Wings of a Dove”. The honorary pallbearers were Christina Conrad, Bryce McHugh, Jessica McHugh, Tania Smith and Stew Hodge. The pallbearers were Mandie Fisher, Brad McHugh, Mark McHugh, Matthew McHugh, Michael McHugh and Teena Seguin. Nina’s final resting place is at the Soldier Valley Cemetery.
