Lewis and Clark’s Expedition explored the area of present-day Harrison County as many of you are aware. But there was one member of the group who had not volunteered for the journey. York was a slave, an African American, who was brought by William Clark on the trip. York had been born in Virginia in 1770 into slavery and was owned by the Clark family.
