Robert Dean Hinkel, 94, died on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Azria Health Rose Vista in Woodbine. He was born on Nov. 18, 1928, to Martin and Velma (Carson) Hinkel in Moorhead. He attended country school outside of Pisgah. Robert was married to Twylia Carrigan on March 17, 1949, at the Elder’s house. Robert started working for Carlstrom Brothers which required relocations for the family. During that time they lived in Pisgah, Shickley, Neb., and Fremont, Neb. In 1973, Robert started farming and continued until his retirement in 1994.
Robert enjoyed fishing and mushroom hunting. He also enjoyed his time helping Scott Pape with projects on the farm. Robert and Twylia loved to travel, especially to the mountains. In his early years, he also loved playing his guitar and mandolin with his brothers.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Twylia in 2018; son-in-law, Everette Durfee; and siblings, Margaret Armstrong, Lucille Hinkel, Roy Hinkel, Ike Hinkel, Lynn Hinkel, Estal Hinkel, Barbara Sorensen and Lorna Tillisch. He is survived by his five children, Marty Hinkel and his wife Janet of West Point, Ne., Neal Vaughn Hinkel and his wife Joyce of Huachuca City, Ariz., Joe Hinkel and his wife Tami of Omaha, Neb., Bobbi Durfee of Pisgah and Steve Hinkel and his wife Pam of Mondamin; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three siblings, Betty Johnson of Council Bluffs, Edna Hopkins of Woodbine and Dwight Hinkel and his wife Karen of Cedar Bluffs; and many other relatives and friends.
A funeral service was held on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine. Elder Terry McHugh presided over the service. The musical selections were “Old Rugged Cross” and “Go Rest High On That Mountain” by Vince Gill. The pallbearers were Ryan Hinkel, Jeff Hinkel, Scott Hinkel, Travis Hinkel, Chase Durfee and Brandon Pape. Robert’s final resting place is at the Soldier Valley Cemetery.
