The 4 County Fair is in its 91st year this year. The event began in 1935.
“Small, local producers had gotten together to exhibit local stuff like they would have almost 100 years ago,” said fair board member Austin Schaben. Schaben is the livestock superintendent for sheep and goats, and is also, in his own words, “the all-around fun adviser.”
New this year is that for the first time ever, the concession stand takes credit cards. But that’s not all that’s new. The concession stand also has a walk-in-cooler.
The fair covers the four counties of Crawford, Harrison, Monona and Shelby.
“It’s just been really special to this community, for damn sure. So we’re just happy to continue that Atradition. And obviously, we’d like to see this thing continue for another 90 years,” Schaben said.
Schaben described the most enjoyable part of the fair.
“When I get to see each one of the kids having fun,” he said.
The fair culminates Wednesday night in the Premium Auction, which rewards the kids who participated in the fair.
