Modale will hold its backpack event in two weeks.

Diane Pruitt, librarian for Modale, spoke July 13 at the Modale town council meeting. She said the backpack program will allow families to receive school supplies to start the year.

Families can attend no matter what school district they reside in. Everyone is welcome to attend, she said.

The program will be at the Modale Public Library from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 6. Also present that night will be representatives from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, which will have a table with information.

Members of the Harrison County Sheriff’s Office will also be at the Aug. 6 event, Woodbine Public Library and the Missouri Valley Public Library will also assist with the backpack program. There will be a VR gaming truck at the event this year for the third time. The Friends of the Library will pay for the VR truck this year, just like last year.

“It’ll be lots of things going on from five to seven,” Pruitt said.

Pruitt added that she was able to save some money on behalf of the library by comparison shopping. By working through a different vendor, she cut $400 off the price of the backpacks.

Starting Aug. 1, the Modale Public Library will return to its regular hours during the school year — 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, plus Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Also, Pruitt’s regular job as a teacher will sometimes keep her away from the library during its weekday hours She is already predicting one or two days in August. When that happens, the library will be open for three extra hours on Saturday, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Other programs include a craft retreat from 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 22. Pruitt described what that day will be about at the July 13 meeting.

“It’s just gonna be, if your have crafts, and you haven’t gotten them completed, come into the library and socialize, and get your crafts done,” she said. Pruitt added that people can come in even if they don’t have a craft project; she can always provide one.

The library will also host “fifth week” events, to be held whenever there’s a fifth Tuesday, Wednesday, a fifth Thursday or a fifth Saturday in any given month. This month there will be two such days. At 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 29, the library will hold a maze challenge. Then, at 6 p.m. Thursday, July 30, the library will hold a word search challenge.

Another program will be trivia on the second Thursday of each month, for all ages. Then there’s Sip and Shade, from 3 to 5 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month.

“And that’s basically, just come in. It’ll be for an hour. Come in and color and chit-chat, and sip whatever you want to sip.”

Messy Masterpieces will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Aug. 15. The library will provide a craft challenge for that night.

Also, on Aug. 20, the library will host its monthly Foodies event from 6:30 to 7:30. For August, the theme is Picnics. People are invited to bring whatever items they would ordinarily bring to a picnic, and the library will supply the hot dogs.

For the whole month of September, all libraries in Harrison County will participate in a library crawl.

Simply visit each library in the county, and each library will have a special prize for participants. The library will host Pages and Pumpkins from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sept. 19, which will be an event for local authors, with a carnival atmosphere.

The council had kind words for Pruitt for the library’s Story Walk program. The pages are placed on poles spread throughout the Modale Park. Once people make it through the park and read all the signs, they’ve read the whole book.

Pruitt said she would change the book every four to six weeks.
