Citizens question City Council’s actions
Dear Editor,
I am writing this to inform the citizens and farmers in and around the Modale community.
First, the Veteran’s Honor Roll Square. That lot was given to the city for a park. I have no qualms about that. When the committee started the building of it, they ran extension cords and water hose from the Legion. Supposedly, 18 months ago they were given permission from an auxiliary member to hook the lights in the Legion’s breaker box. The member had no right to authorize it. She doesn’t pay the power bill or water and sewer, I do. I was the person that should have been notified. We replaced the water heater when it went bad. The last 2 months power bills are over $400. They’re using old fashioned Christmas lights that draw excessive wattage. They need their own breaker box.
Second, the citizens of Modale are paying tens of thousands of dollars to the IRS in penalties and daily compounded interest. I have asked four times under the state open records law for this information. Three times at council meetings, only to be informed they would not provide it to me. At two of the meetings the mayor informed me to shut up or he would knock my teeth out.
Third, the mayor and clerk send out threatening and intimidating letters without council approval. One individual had her curb stop and sidewalk damaged by a drunk driver. She received a letter giving her ten days to rectify the situation or pay a $5,000 fine. The clerk was asked at the February council meeting who set the fines; her answer, I do. The people with the state government say that is overstepping the job title. Any letters or fines need to be addressed by the council only.
This is the short list. The main idea they have; they want the community to be their own HOA.
Council Member Richard Sell, Modale
