MOORHEAD — “Trout Woodcrafts” is one of several new exhibits at the Moorhead Center now through Sept. 20. Trout Woodcrafts has grown from just Omaha to a second location in Sergeant Bluff, Iowa.
The company started, which started with kitchen and closet cabinets and drawers for family, branched into furniture refinishing and toy boxes. What one of the Trout brothers thought up for a new project soon spread into bird, butterfly and bat houses.
The company creates tables, furniture, trivets, doll beds and more. By 2011, brothers Sam and Buck joined More items were added: flags, crosses, checker boards, corn hole boards and more. Some of these items are on display at the Moorhead Cultural Center.
Them there is Cheryl Reynolds. The Sioux City artist says she has crafted shape or form her entire life.
“I remember as a young girl embroidering with my mom and grandma. We embroidered aprons, tea towels, pillow cases and dresser sets,” she said. “As I got older, I began crocheting with them. We made everything from necklaces to afghans.”
Over the years, she has done needlepoint, counted cross stitch, plastic canvas, latch-hook rugs and ceramics. She started scrap booking in 2007 and that led her to card making and to paper crafting.
She retired three years ago after working for the city of Sioux City for 40 years. Since retiring she spent her time doing “what I love” paper crafting. She says she hadn’t thought about craft shows, at first, but as she created more items, she needed to do something with them.
“Crafting allows me to do what I love, it not only gave me a way to move my products, but to make many new friends, along the way,” she said.
You may view her creations, and five other crafters items at the Moorhead Cultural Center in Moorhead. The venue is free, handicapped accessible and family-friendly.
