Embrace the Hills a huge success
Cyclists from Iowa, Nebraska, South Dakota, and New York gathered in Mondamin for the 14th annual Embrace the Hills ride on Sept. 20.
The weather was perfect for the 113 cyclists registered, and the scenery was breathtaking. Or maybe it was the long hills that took their breath away.
Pit stops with free refreshments were set up every 5 to 10 miles along three separate routes. More than 50 volunteers gave their time, money, and food donations to make this ride happen.
Geared toward individuals and cycling teams of all levels and speeds, Embrace the Hills often sees family teams arriving each year.
Kelly and Fran Hutson of Logan biked the Embrace route that took them along the Loess Hills through Pisgah, Iowa. They made their way up Murray Hill, where the view to the west included the flat expanse of Nebraska.
The Hutson Family owns "Day 6 Bicycles", with super-comfortable bikes for anyone tired of skinny seats and bending over the handlebars! Kelly Hutson commented about Embrace the Hills, "The bike ride was fantastic! Scenic route, fun people, awesome snacks, clever signs, and a wonderful lunch."

Families are also represented in the volunteer groups. A husband/wife team was in charge of the pit stop at Willow Lake. A young man and his grandmother gave out snacks at the Magnolia pit stop.
In Little Sioux, a boy and his dad took care of cyclists who stopped at the city park, and in Pisgah two local families were in charge of greeting the participants who made their way to the Loess Hills State Forest Visitor Center.
Proceeds from the event go to the local food pantry, Matthew's House. Next year's ride is set for Sat., Sept. 19, 2026, and info can be found on bikeiowa.com. Richard and Tammi Mether can also be contacted for information via email (tammimail@gmail.com) or by phone (402-253-5102).
