Spring storm pounds Dunlap on April 15
A sudden spring storm began firing up late morning on April 15, bringing in high winds and wind-driven hail. Large hail drenched the area, as it was heavily seen in both Crawford (Dow City, Denison) and Harrison (Mondamin, Pisgah, and Dunlap) counties.
Dunlap took the biggest hit and saw the most hail damage. Residents of Dunlap reported that the west side of town, including several properties was severely damaged from hail, with large, gaping, visible holes in the siding and along with shattered windows, including resident housing and vehicles all over town.
Roofing companies were seen in the community and neighbors were helping each other pick up the pieces of glass, as well as tree limbs and branches. After the first storm, Dunlap saw a second round of hail later in the afternoon.
Glenn Birks, Harrison County Emergency Management Coordinator said the hail was estimated between 2-4 inches in diameter and caused extensive damage to homes, businesses and vehicles.
Boyer Valley Community School was also damaged when the severe weather went through the community. The damage was bad enough at the Dunlap school building that the district dismissed classes early.
Cars in the parking lot of the school had shattered windows and sunroofs, as well as large dents. Both city and county crews spent Wednesday afternoon removing broken glass from a skylight above the main entrance to the high school in Dunlap.
