Jean (Wohlers) Caddell was born July 14, 1948, to William and Audrey (Koenig) Wohlers. She grew up on a farm outside of Missouri Valley and attended elementary, middle, and high school at the Missouri Valley Community School District and was a standout player on the girl’s high school basketball team. After graduating in 1966, Jean attended Wayne State College where she continued her basketball career until transferring to Iowa State University. Jean graduated from Iowa State with a degree in physical education. Jean taught Physical Education and coached middle school girls’ basketball while working for the Logan-Magnolia School District. It was at this time she met Dennis Caddell of Logan and the two were married on June 10,1972. Although the relationship ended, they did have a child, a son named Beau.
Jean served her community through various careers and activities. In addition to being a P.E. teacher, Jean ran her own business as a beautician and worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier and clerk for several years before retiring. After retirement, Jean worked as a substitute teacher and substitute para educator. Jean also volunteered as a girls’ basketball coach and helped coach her son’s soccer team for a few seasons.
In her free time, Jean took part in recreational sports such as tennis and volleyball and was a member of various card clubs and groups. She often made trips to the local library as reading was one of her favorite hobbies as well. Most of all Jean enjoyed visiting with friends and family. Often her visits included a bag of sweet corn, when in season, or a plate of cookies. Jean had a close bond with her granddaughter Hannah and loved supporting and cheering for her at her various events and activities.
