Layton Maasen’s thoughts on career achievement / Reaching the 1,000 point milestone?:

When I was growing up all I wanted to do was play basketball for Missouri Valley.  I have been at my dad's games since I was a baby and when I was older and got to shoot on the court at halftimes of a JH or JV game or at his practices with the older kids it made me dream to be like them.  I never thought of awards or records but just wanted to wear the jersey and win for our town.  I am very grateful to have been able to stay healthy over the years and not miss a game in my career.  To have unlimited access to the gym with dad and spending lots of great time together there has been special.  I am honored to be on that list with Brody Lager, Brad Hansen, and Jole Miller.  I still have a picture of me on Jole's shoulders  when I was a little kid and he broke 1,000 points.  I was lucky to get to play with Brody Lager and learned so much from him, and my dad has told me stories of how great Brad Hansen was in basketball and baseball, well every sport from what I have heard.

Layton Maasen describe shooters mentality / Talk about all the teammates that helped you reach this milestone:

I always shot with lots of confidence and had a short memory.  I'm lucky to have coaches that give the shooters that really work hard the green light to shoot, it also made me spend more time in the gym to keep that green light.  Without the great trust and team play from all the guys I got to play with I never could have achieved this.  I love all my teammates and that will last a lifetime.

What was L. Maasen’s favorite gym to shoot in / What did it mean to reach that magical 1,000 point career scoring milestone:

Our home gym has always been my home away from home.  It has always been my favorite gym to shoot in and it will always be special to me.  To reach 1,000 points is great, but I would give all those back to get to Des Moines and extend our season with my best friends.

1,000 Point Career Milestone / Career Scoring Record at School / Was it within reach at the end of your junior year / Did you think you had a shot at reaching it

I wasn't sure if it was in reach or not my junior year, I had never added up my points to really know but someone told me at the end of the year that if I could stay healthy my senior year I could maybe join that list of great players.

Do you Remember Where You Hit the Shot (School / Team / Gym -- Favorite Spot, Shot):

It was in our home gym against Westwood (1-31-2026) who had beat us pretty good the year before.  I was really focused on winning and didn't think I would break it for another game or two.  I came off of two-screens for a left wing and knocked down the 1,000th career point at the buzzer to end the 3rd quarter.  Scoring 31 pts that night wasn't expected, it was great but getting revenge and winning the game from last year was even better!

You Become the fourth person in School History to Reach 1,000 point plateau / Describe Moment you Hit the Shot / All the Work you put in to Achieve this Career Milestone:

I worked very hard starting when I was 8 years old playing for the Iowa Clovers.  I played on 4 different select teams learning so much from my dad, Coach Lovely, Coach Hamilton, and Coach Bartalini.  Coach Jordan Bierce has always pushed me and the confidence he gave me when younger won't ever  be forgotten.  As far as when I hit the shot, I thought everyone was cheering so loud because it was a buzzer beater, then realized I hit the 1000.  Honestly, I just wanted to win that game!

Coach Travis Maasen’s thoughts on Layton Maasen reaching 1,000 point career milestone / Describe player, work ethic, leader – What they have meant to the program:

Layton has meant the world to this program.  He hasn't always been the biggest player on the court but has always played like he is.  No fear of any player or any open shot.  He has that "irrational confidence" where he feels open right when he gets off the bus.  We trusted him to put points on the board but always needed him to get others involved.  Finishing 11th in the state in assists in Class 2A shows that he really worked hard at that for our team. He worked with many coaches at area camps, college camps, and countless select ball games.  Layton has probably had it harder than any player I have coached when it came to being patient with his development and performance in practices and games.  I hope he realizes that was always out of love and belief in him.

BOTH: Coach Maasen / Layton Maasen: What was it like to play for each other.  Fans in stands view it as ‘He’s only playing cuz his dad’s the coach:

Coach Travis: Anyone that really knows basketball and has watched Layton practice and work in the off-season knows that is total garbage.  This kid deserved every minute he had coming to him.  We've never coddled him and always had higher expectations for him just like any of our other team captains.  He never gave up and if challenged ALWAYS came back stronger, with nothing but respect for those that pushed him hard.

Travis -- What has it been like Coaching Your Son and See Him Reach this Career Milestone

It's always been my dream to lead  the program that gave me so much as a player and to coach my son has been the icing on the cake.  Coaching him in the same program that I have loved and worked so hard for has been so special there are no words!  He and his classmates have always been so special to me, we've all been through a lot together and gave absolutely everything we had in the tank for the program.

Layton -- What has it been like playing for your Dad, Reaching the Career Assists, 3-Pt Record, etc, etc, etc. -- Did you two even talk about the game once you left bus, gym after a game night?

Reaching the 1000 pts, 3 pt record, and Assist Record does not come close to comparing to playing with my best friends, my dad, and our awesome assistant coaches.  The records may get broken, but our memories and relationships will last forever.
