Passing on the JOY

For over 10 years, the Missouri Valley Garden Club has been sowing the seeds of community through a long-standing partnership with the local library. This spring club members are once again stocking the shelves at the Missouri Valley Public Library. Seeds are provided at no cost to residents.

Event organizers say the project is a true labor of love. Throughout the growing season: Garden Club members identify the healthiest plants, harvest the seeds, dry them and carefully package them for the following season.

This has been going project on for almost 10 years.

“By saving seeds from our own local gardens, we ensure that what we're sharing is hardy and proven to grow well right here in our local soil,” said Phyllis Henrich. “It's a wonderful way to pass on the joy of gardening to our patrons and the entire community.”

The collection of seeds features a diverse mix of perennials, vegetables, pollinator friendly flowers, and annuals. The selection will grow again next month when the Garden Club packages another 500 envelopes of seeds. The packets are available during regular hours.

Residents are encouraged to stop by the Missouri Valley Public Library frequently to see the new additions and pick up a few varieties to start their own gardens.
