Reverend Michael B. Berner, age 65, of Council Bluffs, passed away April 11, 2025, in Council Bluffs. Fr. Mike was born Jan. 9, 1960, in Council Bluffs to Charles R. and P. Joan (Edwards) Berner. Fr. Mike graduated from St. Albert High School in 1978. He earned a bachelor’s degree in theology from Creighton University in 1982, and a master’s degree in theology from Notre Dame in 1985. Fr. Mike was ordained into the priesthood Diocese of Des Moines in 1986. He served parishes in Creston/Afton/Lenox, Audubon/Exira, Earling/Defiance, Logan/Missouri Valley, Corpus Christi in Council Bluffs and Griswold/Reno. After his retirement, Fr. Mike moved to Council Bluffs where he was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. Fr. Mike was preceded in death by his father, Dr. Charles R. Berner, DDS in 2011. Fr. Mike is survived by his mother, Joan Berner of Council Bluffs; siblings, Charles Berner of Council Bluffs, Terry Berner of Chicago, Ill., Katie (Chris) Backhaus of Omaha, Neb., Amy Berner of Chicago, Andy Berner of Council Bluffs; two nieces, Lisa Wells and Erin Backhaus; four nephews, Eric Berner, Conor Backhaus, Colin Backhaus, and Spencer Berner; great-nephew, Kitt; great-niece, Maisie; uncles, Robert (Cecilia) Berner in Connecticut, and Denny (Ruth) Berner of Minden; other relatives and many friends. Wake service, Tuesday, April 22, 2025, at 6 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8 p.m. at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 4 Valley View Drive. Mass of Christian Burial, Wednesday, April 23, 2025, at 11 a.m. at the church. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery with a lunch following at St. Patrick’s Parish Hall. Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Patrick Catholic Church or St. Albert Schools.
