Applications being accepted for Woodbine Veteran Banners
The annual ‘Hometown Heroes’ banner project is underway, led by the partnership project from both the Women for Veterans (Woodbine), the American Legion Post #143, and Woodbine Main Street.
The new banner design and 2025 application form are now available, and applicants can find the forms at www.livinginwoodbine.com.
“This year we have expanded the number of streetlights available on Lincolnway, thanks to a grant from Harrison County Community Foundation. More banner brackets on streetlights equals another two and a half blocks of veterans we are able to remember and honor,” said Deb Sprecker, Executive Director, Woodbine Main Street. “There are now more than 65 available street lights equipped with brackets for banner display.”
The banner project showcases local veterans. In 2025, the series of banners starts with
recipients of the Purple Heart at the city gateway, followed by veterans of WWII, and continues with subsequent years and military engagements. The “past and present” tribute was well received last year. Banners went up before Veterans’ Day in November and stayed up through the winter and spring.
"The Woodbine American Legion Post 143 is involved with helping local individuals who proudly and honorably served their country throughout the year. This project is one we are very happy to participate in," says Steve Harrington, legion commander. "When you see the Hometown Heroes banners displayed in a community, you know the community recognizes and appreciates the sacrifices veterans have made for their country."
EMAIL PHOTO & INFO (Sept. 19 deadline): Veterans and their families with ties to the Woodbine area may submit forms and photos to info@woodbinemainstreet.com before the Sept 19 deadline. Funds raised from the program will go equally to the nonprofit partners organizing the project.
