School board discusses parking spots

This proposed fundraiser for Missouri Valley schools will let you get up close and personal with the school. And it will put you on the spot.
You can reserve your own parking for sporting events and other school functions, according to Christie Gochenour, school superintendent.
“If it’s a football game, you can buy your spot for the football games. If you are in music, or a play, or speech, and we’re having something here, and you want to buy your spot for that, you can,” Gochenour said at the school board meeting Aug. 10. “Just something close up front, and the money then goes into general activities.”
The general activities fund pays for entry fees and travel, Gochenour said.
Anyone can use that parking space during the day. But when the activity is taking place, that spot is for the exclusive use of the person who reserved it. That use will be in effect until that season ends, she said.
The way Gochenour imagined it, a laminated sign would be posted near the designated spaces for referrees. Anyone interested would submit a request through a sealed bid through Google, and there will be a limited number of spaces available.
School board member Jessie Dewaele worried that the signs and the posts might deteriorate, and she suggested painting an image on the pavement, similar to the arrowhead symbols used elsewhere throughout town.
“That might show a little bit of school pride, as well,” she said.
The board voted in favor at the meeting, but Gochenour said after the meeting that a final decision has not been made yet. To find out more, call the school board office at (712) 642-2706.
Air Conditioning Installed
Also at the meeting, the school board took a walk-through of the work that was performed on the air conditioning system and other work handled over the summer.
Gochenour and Mike Tiffey, maintenance supervisor, led the group through the school.
All that really remains is to lift the HVAC units on to the roof and attach them to the high school, he said.
“Tomorrow, the big crane’s coming,” he said Aug. 10.
The air conditioning is already running at the middle school. The elementary school is waiting on a part scheduled to arrive the next day, Tiffey said.
