Missouri Valley Scout Troop 558 receives American Legion Foundation grant
Missouri Valley Scouting America Troop 558 received a $1,639.79 grant from The American Legion of Iowa Foundation to replace and update equipment used during camping trips and other outdoor activities.
The grant check was presented to the troop by Brian Ring of The American Legion of Iowa Foundation and Fred Hoyt of the Julius F. Muller American Legion Post in Missouri Valley.
The funding will allow the troop to purchase two six-person tents, a dining fly, four hammocks, two sets of kitchen tools, two rolling camp kitchen storage units and wash-station tubs. The new equipment will replace aging gear and help provide Scouts with safer, better-organized outdoor experiences.
Troop 558 serves approximately 10 to 15 boys and girls ages 11 to 17 from Missouri Valley and nearby rural communities. Because many members rely on troop-owned equipment, these purchases will help ensure that all Scouts can participate, regardless of their personal financial resources.
Scouting America’s youth-led program gives Scouts opportunities to plan campouts, organize meals, manage equipment and lead group activities. These experiences help young people develop leadership, communication, teamwork, problem-solving and personal responsibility.
Troop 558 is chartered by the Julius F. Muller American Legion Post in Missouri Valley and works closely with the organization to promote citizenship, patriotism, respect for veterans and community service. Scouts participate in local events, flag ceremonies, community cleanups and service projects supporting veterans and the surrounding community.
The troop will supplement the grant with money raised through local fundraising activities and community support. Troop leaders and youth members will inventory and maintain the equipment so it can serve current and future Scouts for years to come.
