Missouri Valley safety plan identifies concerns, potential improvements

A Missouri Valley transportation safety plan identified 11 crashes involving a fatality or serious injury from 2015 through 2024, according to City Administrator Turri Colglazier. The plan addresses safety for vehicles, pedestrians and bicyclists.

“It also looked at community input and identified areas such as Erie Street, the school areas, Willow/US 30, 1st Street, 6th Street and 5th/Huron where safety improvements could be considered,” Colglazier said in written responses to questions from the Harrison County Times-Reporter.

Adoption would not authorize spending on every proposed improvement, Colglazier said.

“Adopting the plan does not mean the City is committing to complete all of the projects listed or immediately spend money on them. The projects have estimated costs and priorities, but each would still have to be considered and funded separately. Some may be eligible for future state or federal grant funding.”

Residents had opportunities to provide input during planning, according to Colglazier. The plan is intended to help identify and address safety concerns while positioning Missouri Valley for future transportation grants.

“I think the biggest thing for residents to understand is that this is a long-term planning document, not a commitment to start construction on all of these projects. It gives us another tool to use when opportunities and funding become available.”
