Dorothy LaFern (Michel) Warner, 95, passed away on June 17, 2023, at Azria Health Rose Vista Nursing Home in Woodbine. She was born Aug. 3, 1927, to Alfred William “Slim” and Daisy Michel, south of Woodbine, on their family farm. She attended school at Woodbine and graduated in 1945. Dorothy met Charles “Chuck” Warner while attending nurse’s training in Omaha, Neb. She happened to be taking care of Chuck’s dad, Wallace, and he thought she should meet his son. The rest is history, and they were married on Feb. 9, 1947. Dorothy stayed home on the farm until she and Chuck bought the John Deere dealership in 1958. She worked as a bookkeeper for many years at the business.
Dorothy was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Woodbine and a P.E.O. sister. She also enjoyed visiting the Woodbine Carnegie Library and was an avid reader. Dorothy and Chuck belonged to a little group of friends that played cards and enjoyed getting together. They called themselves the “Idiots”. Dorothy had many interests, she enjoyed gardening vegetables and flowers, baking pies and delicious rolls, canning, cooking, fishing, traveling, playing piano and collecting dolls. Dorothy was also famous for her beautiful hand-done quilts and for the china she painted for 40 years with her sister Ruby. They both did beautiful work and were very prolific painters!
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Chuck; and infant sister, Evelyn. She is survived by her two sons, Charles “Chuck” Warner Jr. and his wife Melody and Gary Warner and his wife Marie, all of Woodbine; grandchildren, Tiffany Snyder and her husband Jason of Cumming, Ga., Trina Wingert and her husband Jake of Woodbine, Nick Warner and his wife Kristi of Blair, Neb. and Bryce Warner of Minden; great-grandchildren, Grayden Snyder of Bloomington, Minn.; Rhys Snyder of Cumming; Owen, Zane and Cora Wingert of Woodbine; Alexis, Addison and Brock Warner of Blair; sister, Ruby Carter, who came to stay at Azria Health Rose Vista to be close to Dorothy; nephew, William “Willie” Carter and his family of Irwin; and many other family members and friends.
A funeral service was held on Thursday, June 22, 2023, at First Christian Church in Woodbine. Pastor Chuck Snow presided over the service. The recorded musical selections were “It’s a Wonderful Life” by Louis Armstrong and “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Isreal Kamakawiwo’ole. The honorary pallbearers were Alexis Warner, Addison Warner, Brock Warner, Rhys Snyder, Zane Wingert, Cora Wingert and Grayden Snyder. The pallbearers were Nick Warner, Bryce Warner, Jason Snyder, Owen Wingert, Jake Wingert and Willie Carter. Dorothy’s final resting place is at the Woodbine Cemetery.
