Jerry Hussing, 79

Jerry Hussing was born on Oct. 22, 1942, and died on Friday, Sept. 9, 2022, at the age of 79. He was born in Council Bluffs, to Ralph and Fleta Hussing. After their divorce, Fleta married Lester Peterson and he helped in the upbringing of Jerry and his siblings. Jerry started school in Council Bluffs and when he was seven years old the family moved to Little Sioux. He attended school there until he joined the United States Navy in 1962. Jerry proudly served his country for four years and four months, serving as an Air Dale Mechanic on the USS Bennington during Vietnam. On Aug. 13, 1966, Friday the 13th, Jerry was united in marriage to Sally Peasley at the Onawa Christian Church in Onawa. He worked construction on the road and then started working for Harrison County Engineering Department as a road grader operator, which is the job he had until his retirement.

Jerry was a member of the Church of Christ in Little Sioux. He loved fishing and hunting and was an avid mushroom hunter, which is a love he has passed on to his children and grandchildren. Jerry and Sally enjoyed square dancing and camping together. He also liked playing card games, board games and marbles. He was extremely competitive and many times found a way to cheat through the game. He thought he had a poker face but his family could see right through it because of his grin.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph Hussing and Fleta and Lester Peterson; twin brother, Gary Hussing; brother, Ralph Hussing; and sister, Ylonda Morrison. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Sally Hussing of Little Sioux; daughters, Michelle McMains of Little Sioux, Kandy (Steven) Forbes of Little Sioux and Kelly Taylor of Sioux City; grandchildren, Jeremy McMains (Jessica Gill), Brett (Cayce) McMains, Paige (Ben) Short, Halie (Jordan) Sehr, Kyle Forbes, Jordan Forbes-Infante, Tylor (Courtney) Forbes, Courtney (Jordan) Neill, Ethan Taylor, Austin Taylor (Kennedy Brand), Alex Anson (Mac Vincent), Isabella Anson and Emmalynn Anson; great-grandchildren, Ali, Liam, Briar, Averi, Rhett, Banks, Indie, Everson, Fletcher, Elouria, Ely, Abram, Azariah, Gemma and Adalynn; brother, Jack (Janice) Peterson of Missouri Valley; nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held on Saturday, Sept. 17, 2022, at the Church of Christ in Little Sioux. Pastor Wayne Bahr presided over the service. The musician was Rick Powell and the musical selections were “In The Garden”, “The Old Rugged Cross” and “I Want To Stroll Over Heaven With You”. The honorary pallbearers were the DUCK LEAGUE BOYS: Bruce, Digger, Grant, Kody, Nathan and Nate. The pallbearers were Jeremy McMains, Brett McMains, Kyle Forbes, Tylor Forbes, Ethan Taylor, Austin Taylor, Alex Anson, Ben Short, Jordan Neill, Jordan Sehr and Hank Crowder. The funeral military rites were performed by Little Sioux American Legion Post #410, Mondamin American Legion Post #396 and United States Navy Funeral Honor Guard.
