Logan-Magnolia Community School February 11, 2026 The regular monthly meeting of the Board of Education of the Logan-Magnolia Community School District was held on the above date at 6:00 P.M. in the high school media center. Roll call vote was answered by, Vice-President Derrick Mether, Director Travis Kuhlman, Director Nikki Allen, and Director Leslie Vicary, and Superintendent Jacob Hedger, Secondary Principal Blake Dickinson, and Business Manger Daniel Mikels. Please see the attached list for everyone else attending the meeting. President Julie Witte was absent. 2. Review/Change/Approve Agenda Leslie Vicary moved to approve the agenda, seconded by Travis Kuhlman, carried. 4-0. 3. Public Speakers No public speaker spoke. 4. Administrators/Directors’ Reports 9 athletes and Coach Hinkel spoke to the board about last season and the plan and hopes for this season. They shared their position and their favorite memories from last season. Elementary Principal Jill Kiger’s Report was presented by Mr. Hedger Noteworthy events: * Our first One School, One Book event is underway. Students and staff kicked off the event with an assembly on January 29. Every family has the opportunity to read the book at home and teachers read it at school as well. * The elementary continues to celebrate our Capturing Kids Hearts winners and recently found out we’ve been nominated for a National Showcase School award. Selected schools will be announced in late spring. Our strategist, Jimmy Dawson, will be here February 12 to talk to staff. * The new Social Studies Standards are out and Elizabeth Meeker has been working to identify changes and planning for the next year. * The district is hosting three student teachers currently and will be adding two practicum students soon. The elementary are excited to learn and grow with these future educators. * March is a busy and engaging month. Highlights include the elementary musical on March 6, parent-teacher conferences on March 9–10, and student concerts later in the month. ISASP testing dates have been finalized, and field trip schedules are coming together. * FAST testing has wrapped up. Highlights of the data include: - *2% increase in overall literacy proficiency from fall - *Kindergarten (which includes TK) has 80% of students proficient in literacy - *3% increase in overall math proficiency from fall (80 to 83) Secondary Principal Blake Dickinson * Notable moments: - Our Top Cats were nominated and selected for demonstrating the trait of responsibility: ** 6th Grade: Madison Konecny, 7th Grade: Madalyn Mether, 8th Grade: Olivia Davie, 9th Grade: Aiden King, 10th Grade: Xander Pitt, 11th Grade: Chay Frazier, 12th Grade: Masen Rhiley * Special Olympics - Four students competed in the basketball skills competition at IWCC. All 4 got 1st place in their division and qualified for the state competition in Iowa City in March. * Cabin Fever Week - Activities included: spoon game, capture the flag, R,P,S tournament, cup-reach game, pep rally, SnoCo dance (King & Queen: Adam Roden & Makennah Bales) * Wrestling - State qualifiers - Gracyn Stone, Teagan Carritt and Mary Bowman punched tickets - Boys team qualified for state duals - Max Wingert - 100th pin * Fine Arts - Four students qualified for State Speech: Jaxen Kreisel, Trevin Kurth, Cecilia Alvis and Bailey Blevins - Jazz band earned a “1” rating at Lewis Central competition - Show choir has started their season and competed at state this week * Student Groups - Nine upperclassmen attended the Nebraska Character Academy Conference in Omaha - The Principals’ Advisory Council, a nine-student group that meets monthly to provide feedback and discuss current issues in the school, met for the first time. Superintendent Jacob Hedger * February 2-6 was School Counselor Appreciation Week * Facility/Construction Items - - Updated “to do” list. - The timeline for the Science classroom renovation is moving along well. - Administration is also working to find solutions for the lack of ventilation in the FCS room and moving a block wall to create a larger restroom for a handicap lift. - Administration are seeking options for a handicapped accessible van/bus. - The half wall out front is being tuckpointed. * Monthly Newsletter - February Newsletter * Staff Brags - - Kurtis Hinkel - Though most people do not realize this, he is covering a van route because of a medical issue with a driver and having another driver retire. We are thankful for not having much snow because he does the snow removal himself. He is tasked with a lot of things, and just keeps finding ways to get stuff done. - Special Olympics Leaders - Mrs. Killpack, Ms. Carley, and Ms. Linnea are amazing at working with our Special Olympics team members. Their efforts bring great pride to our school and joy to our students. - High School Wrestling Teams - Congratulations to the athletes, but also to their coaches. The season is a long, labor driven season with lots of ups and downs. Their accomplishments should definitely be celebrated. - Jake Krueger - He has utilized several in–house, real world projects around the school. His students have built shelving and other like projects to support. * Open Teaching/Staff Positions: - Asst. HS Boys Soccer - Asst. HS Football - Paraeducator - Van driver - Asst. JH Football Coach * Updates - Facility Needs Plan - The intercom system has been fully implemented and all the updates and upgrades are currently working thanks to Mr. Christensen. * Legislative Happenings: - SSA - 1.75%??? - Property Tax change - Cash at all events? - Budget Guarantee funding? - Changes to SAVE funds - Full year of Government - Comprehensive School Improvement planning update * Tami Dunham was chosen as the Educator of the Year by the Logan, Iowa Community Foundation. 5. Consent Agenda Approve Minutes, Bills, and Financial Statements Travis Kuhlman moved to approve the consent agenda, prepaid bills, board bills, financial statements, and minutes of January 8, 2026, January 14, 2026, and February 2, 2026, meetings. Graduation Marlene Monico spoke to the board about moving the graduation date in 2026. She spoke about why their family chose this school. She talked about the school vision and mission statement. Topics covered different colleges and universities graduation dates, community input and the surveys sent out. She presented a list of questions for the board. No action was taken 7. Community Foundation Brianne Niedermeyer spoke to them about the updates and progress of initiatives that the community foundation is working on. She fielded questions from the board. 8. Facility Improvements Mr. Hedger spoke to the board about renovation of the playground. Mr. Hedger would like to put this into our 3-year goal, with each of the year completing a portion, while also being able to use grant opportunities if they arise. The board discussed different options they would like administration to investigate. Mr. Hedger spoke to the board about the floor scrubber presentation. No decision was made while admin continues to look at more machines and options. Nikki Allen moved to approve the bid of $5,195.43 as presented for the fence on the playground to get a price for galvanized as it would match the current fence over there, seconded by Travis Kuhlman, discussed, carried. 4-0. The board discussed the bid of $9,294.44 as presented for the fence by the cooling units. No action was taken. Travis Kuhlman moved to approve Moy Electric for repair of existing parking lot lights for $9,782.00, seconded by Nikki Allen, discussed, carried. 4-0. 9. Nutrition Program RFP Travis Kuhlman moved to approve the RFP for the Nutrition Program for 26-27, seconded by Nikki Allen, discussed, carried 4-0. 14. Instructional Support Levy Resolution to Consider Continued Participation in the Instructional Support Program and to Schedule a Public Hearing Travis Kuhlman moved to approve the attached resolution above and set the hearing date and time to March 4, 2026, at 6:00P.M. In the media center at 1200 North 2nd Ave, Logan, IA 51546, seconded by Leslie Vicary, discussed, carried 4-0.
