Public Speakers No Public Speakers 4. Administrators’/ Directors’ Reports Elementary Principal Jill Kiger Noteworthy events: • The elementary reading committee’s initiative this year to have one reading event each month has been going well. Elementary had their white out January 23, and February 11 will be our next event. • Students read and enjoy a snack. (After the 23rd one student told me at early bus dismissal he had read 91 pages and was so excited about reading!) • Elementary celebrated the 100th day of school on January 30th. • On February 5th our leadership team met. Our focus was preparing for data day on February 7th and discussing learning opportunities needed for the remainder of the year. • On February 25 all the early childhood staff will attend training in Avoca. Our January date was canceled. • February 25 DARE will begin for our fifth graders. • February 28, Jimmy Dawson from Capturing Kids Hearts will be here all day. DATA • Mr. Kiger presented FAST Reading results and spoke about FAST Math. • Kindergarten has 59% of their kids already making spring benchmark on letter sounds. First grade had huge growth in accuracy of sight words (from 9% in the fall to 59% in the winter) as well as accuracy in sentence reading/CMBr (7% to 39%) • Second grade had the highest aReading score as a grade with 70% and this is the first time these kids have taken this test. The students accuracy on CBMr went from 64% to 86%. Third grade saw a nice jump in aReading scores from 55-66% of their kids proficient. In addition accuracy on CBMr went from 67% to 88%. • Fourth grade math scores grew by 6% from 77 to 83% of kids proficient. Fourth grade scores remained consistent in proficiency in CBMr at 73%. If you take out new to the district scores, it goes up 3%. If you take out IEP students, it goes to 81% proficiency on CBMr. • Fifth grade data had students demonstrate incredible accuracy at 100%. They also increased the number of students proficient by 4%. • Sixth grade students maintained a strong accuracy at 95%. Seven new students to the district in 6th grade this year. Without these 7 scores our data remained consistent with 81% of students proficient. • Staff reviewed all the data, reorganized groups as needed for intervention and talked about any additional strategies that needed focus pertinent to the data and grade level. The motivation of students was discussed as well as there were pockets of students that didn’t do their best work. Discussion was held around ways to increase motivation for them besides the goal setting and one on one conference already in place. Upcoming events: • February 11 Paws Day Reading • February 14 Valentine's Day parties • February 19-21 No school • February 25 Preschool to training in Avoca (NO PR OR PK), DARE starts • February 28 CKH staff here all day • March 3-Family Event in the morning • March 7th, 2025- 4 performances (2 matinees @ 1:30 and 2:30 & 2 evening) • March 11 Paws Day Reading Secondary Principal Blake Dickinson Overview: The highlight of January for many students and staff was our Cabin Fever Week, which was a great opportunity to stir up school spirit and bring some warmth and light to the building while it was a bit dark and dreary outside. The competitions, dress up days, and pep rally helped create many memories and brought students and staff together. These first weeks back also served as an opportunity to re-establish expectations and procedures, especially those around Capturing Kids’ Hearts. Our students have started the semester strong! Notable moments: • Four girl wrestlers qualified for the state tournament: Teagan Carritt, Jordan Buffum, Nancy Bowman, and Mary Bowman. • Coach Kirk Kersten was recognized for coaching wrestling for 50 years, Jordan Buffum, Nancy Bowman, and Kalab Kuhl earned their 100th career wins. • The Show Choir and Jazz Band performed at the IHSMA Competition and the Show Choir earned a I rating. • The junior high girls basketball team and boys wrestling teams got off to a strong start. • This month’s Top Cats were selected for demonstrating the trait of respect. Those students were: 7th Grade - Teagan Meyer, 8th Grade - Karsyn Storm, 9th Grade - Alexandra Kirlin, 10th Grade - John Jensen, 11th Grade - Anthony Householder, 12th Grade - Ava Rowe • The student council hosted its second blood drive of the year. • The school FCCLA chapter has been restarted and had their first meeting. • Several of our Jimmy King Grant items have been purchased and are arriving in classrooms. • The middle school welcomed two teachers, Mrs. Hogarth and Mrs. Koenig, who will be moving over to the middle school from the elementary. Staff plan to finalize most other details in the coming weeks. Progress toward goals: • At our last two secondary PD meetings, we sent emails to students who were failing classes in an attempt to increase accountability and communication. We are continuing to do so at each third quarter meeting. • Each week of the semester we have increased the number of relationship-building activities done during advisory. • During a recent CKH meeting, we were asked to apply to be a “rising star” school due to our active participation and success with building relationships. Superintendent Jacob Hedger Facility/Construction Items - • Elementary classroom addition has begun with footings being dug and poured last. Additional work continues each day. Keep that weather warm! • Continued electrical and plumbing work is happening in the dome. • The dome continues to make great progress. All of the steel for the mezzanine level is erected and concrete work has begun. • See the Facilities Needs Master List • Administrations will have bids for the cooling tower to approve at the March board meeting. • There have been supply delays and so the electrical upgrades won’t be completed at Mid-Winter break. We are looking at other possible dates to install. Monthly Newsletter - February Newsletter Staff Brags - • Katie Muff - She has really gone above and beyond by providing some unique experiences for her students this year. Most recently she got her class on 103.7 KAT FM. They recited the Pledge of Allegiance. She also received a grant for hatching chickens. • Staff Coverage - We have had a lot of sick staff this month. We have had several staff members step up and cover duties for whole or part days. A truly exceptionally selfless group of people that I am blessed to work with. Jill and Blake have done a fantastic job getting things covered as best as possible. • Bailey Krueger and Anne Coberly - Last week was counselor appreciation week and these two deserve some appreciation. They really do work hard to ensure our students' academic, social, and career needs are met. • Kurtis Hinkel - We have had some increased transportation needs this year and especially in the past several weeks. He continues to meet those needs daily without any major hardships for those involved. Also, his snowplow purchase has really kept the snow away! School Safety • Administration continues to work on new door plaques that will have our logo and be universal throughout the district. We are also developing plans for how to mark exterior doors. • The team is working on response protocol for adverse situations that affect the Logan-Magnolia Community. (house fires, deaths, etc.) • We continue to practice our Standard Response Protocol drills on a regular basis. Upcoming Dates Feb 19-21 - Mid-Winter Break March 4 – College Fair March 10 – HS Pops Concert March 11 – Elementary Musical March 17/18 - P/T Conferences March 17 - SIAC Meeting (6:00) March 21 - Prom Open Teaching Positions Current open positions are: • 6th grade Math and Science • Secondary Vocal Music (interviews soon) • Head Volleyball • Asst. HS Track • We have hired Sam Beck as a substitute custodian who will work when others are sick and/or during events. Iowa STEM BEST Grant Last year Mr. Killpack was awarded the Iowa STEM BEST Grant to purchase and install a new greenhouse as part of the restart of Big Cat Industries. This year I worked to apply for year two of the grant in order to continue the growth of Big Cat Industries. The grant provides $40k with a school matching $20k. The application included funding for CTE training, a community liaison person, and equipment for the classes that are part of the Big Cats project. 5.
