Scott Merrill Mohn, 48, died on Wednesday, Oct. 18, 2023, at his home in Woodbine. He was born on June 16, 1975, in Omaha, Neb. to Merrill and Zennith (Moores) Mohn. He started school in Omaha before the family moved to Woodbine. He attended the Woodbine school where he was very active in the music and drama programs and he graduated with the Class of 1993. Scott went on to attend Iowa Western Community College where he studied Engineering and Sign Language. He worked various jobs in Omaha before moving to the San Francisco, California area. While there he worked as a bartender at the airport and at a resort in Guerneville, Calif. Scott was united in marriage to Michael Newsome in Guerneville on May 3, 2014. After the Russian River flooded, they decided to move back to Woodbine. Scott and Mike ran the Dairy Sweet for many years and also worked at Foodland.

Scott was very technologically savvy and was most recently a Beta Tester for Apple. His sharp intellect and natural curiosity allowed him to stay at the forefront of technological advancements throughout his life. Cooking was a large part of his life and he approached it with enthusiasm and creativity. Scott had a passion for the plants he tended to at home. It was within the walls of his home where Scott truly found solace and joy, and where there was always music playing, anything from rock to classical. His relationship with Mike provided a solid foundation built on trust, love and shared experiences.

Scott was preceded in death by his grandparents and his mother-in-law, Sharon Newsome. He is survived by his husband, Mike Newsome; mother, Zennith and her husband Gola Wilber of Hastings; father, Merrill Mohn and his wife Hazel of Woodbine; siblings, Brenda and her husband Xavier Budd of Houston, Texas, Rodney Mohn and his wife April of Woodbine and Zara and her husband Brett Boettger of Woodbine; father-in-law, Richard Newsome of Carbon; cat, Luna; and many other relatives and friends.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023, at The Roundy Center in Woodbine. Beth Fouts presided over the service. The recorded musical selections were “The Lord’s Prayer” by Scott Mohn and “Shine Down” by 1993 Class Act Spring Fling. The pallbearers were Zach Dunham, Corey Johnston, Justin Mohn, Kevin Moores, Joe Newsome and Travis Wright.
