WEST HARRISON COMMUNITY SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION MONTHLY MEETING – 6:30 PM January 8, 2025 LIBRARY – MONDAMIN, IA The West Harrison Community School District Board of Education met in regular session with the following present: Randy Wohlers, Julie Kuhlman, Lorraine Thomas, Hillary Stevenson, and Kim Nunez Directors. Marty Fonley, Superintendent, Jackie Fonley, Principal, Tonya Radil, Board Secretary/Treasurer. Visitors. WHEA Representative Jami Sherer Called to Order. The meeting was called to order in the Library at 6:30 p.m. by President Wohlers. Roll Call. Consent Agenda. A motion was made by Director Thomas and seconded by Director Kuhlman to consent agenda, monthly bills, and the board minutes from December 11, 2024. No Discussion. Directors Wohlers Kuhlman aye, Thomas aye, Stevenson aye, and Nunez aye. 5-0 motion carried. Public Items of Discussion. Board Items of Discussion. Opening Proposal from the WHEA. Consideration of Early Retirement A motion was made by Director Kuhlman and second by Director Stevenson to approve the Early Retirement for Gina Birdsall. The school board members appreciate Gina's dedication to West Harrison for the past 22 ½ years. Discussion. Directors Wohlers aye, Kuhlman aye, Thomas aye, Stevenson aye, and Nunez aye. 5-0 motion carried. Consideration of Early Retirement A motion was made by Director Kuhlman and second by Director Thomas to approve an extension for Early Retirement for Angela Smith until April 30, 2025. Discussion. Directors Wohlers aye, Kuhlman aye, Thomas aye, Stevenson aye, and Nunez aye. 5-0 motion carried. Consideration of At-Risk/Dropout Prevention Application. A motion was made by Director Nunez and second by Director Stevenson to apply for $79,759.00 in At-Risk/Dropout Prevention. Discussion. Directors Wohlers aye, Kuhlman aye, Thomas aye, Stevenson aye, and Nunez aye. 5-0 motion carried. Administration Reports. Mrs. Fonley mentioned that during senior exit interviews students expressed their appreciation for West Harrison and the staff for helping them throughout their school journey. The parent who attended were happy with their childs’ school experience, and the direction the school is going. The middle school staff have been working on their PBIS expectations, and will be kicking off the middle school PBIS system this week. Overall the attendance has improved form the previous year to date. The winter reading and math FAST screening has begun for K-8. Mr. Fonley discussed the staffing plans for next year with the board. He will be posting an opening for high school English, high school math, and a vocal teacher position. Mr. Fonley also discussed the results of student interest surveys for high school spring sports and sports sharing for the 2025-26 school year. He is planning to set up a community meeting on this topic soon and will place these items for consideration on the February board agenda. The next regular board meeting will be on February 12, 2025 at 6:30 PM. Adjournment. The meeting adjourned at 7:20 PM.
