Eugene Allen Michael, 77, died on July 25, 2023, at Bergan Mercy in Omaha, Neb. He was born on May 5, 1946, in rural Magnolia, to Francis and Alice (Matthews) Michael. He attended Magnolia school and then in 10th grade the combined Logan-Magnolia school graduating in 1964. After graduation, Gene went to work in the shipyards in Virginia. He moved back to help out on the family farm outside Magnolia. Gene was united in marriage to Jane McFee in 1968 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Logan. He worked in the Carpenter's Union in Council Bluffs, construction with his brother Lyle, at Duvals in Logan, and as a custodian at Logan-Magnolia School, getting home each night just in time to watch the Johnny Carson Show. Gene went on to work as a rural mail carrier for 24 years, retiring in 2012. He was proud to have served his country in the United States Army.
Gene Allen Michael lived a life defined by simplicity, creativity, and an appreciation for the small joys that shaped each day. One of his passions was working in his garage, where he dedicated countless hours to building things with his own hands. Gene found great pleasure in spending time amidst nature. The camaraderie he shared with friends while cutting wood in the timber brought him immense joy. Gene also enjoyed playing cards and shared lasting memories with those lucky enough to sit at the table alongside him.
Gene is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Lyle and Paul Michael. He is survived by his wife, Jane; children, Danny Michael and his wife Terri of Magnolia, Christina and her husband Wade Andersen of Persia, and Matthew Michael and his wife Nikki of Pisgah; 7 grandchildren, Abigail, Rylee, Morgan, Brooks, Bentley, Wyatt and Laynie; sisters-in-law, Joan Michael and Evelyn Bucy; nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
A Memorial Service was held on Tuesday, August 1, 2023, at Fouts Funeral Home in Woodbine. Connie McWilliams presided over the service. The recorded musical selection was “Paper Roses” by Connie Francis. Military Rites were performed by Magnolia American Legion O’Hara Seeley Post 612.
