Minutes of Work Session Board of Directors The Missouri Valley Community School District Monday, August 15, 2022 Call to Order Vice President John Ferris called the meeting to order at 5:34 P.M. on Monday, August 15, 2022, at the District Office Conference Room, 109 E Michigan Street, Missouri Valley, Iowa. Roll Call Present: John Ferris, Joanna Barnard, Bridget Myler and Carrie Watson. Absent: Jeff Janssen Also Present: Superintendent Christi Gochenour, Kristie Mason, Nate McDonald, Robin Holtz, Secretary Teresa Griffith and Lou Ann Gvist with Iowa School Board Association. Approve Agenda Director Barnard approved the agenda. Director Watson seconded. All Ayes; motion carried. Break for dinner from 5:35 P.M. to 5:58 P.M. Strategic Planning Session Superintendent Gochenour introduced Lou to the group. Lou explained the layout of the workshop. They walked through ‘what is governance’ and the roles of Governance and Management. There was a discussion of addressing questions, concerns and complaints. The roles of the Board for improving student learning were discussed which include the following; Set Clear, High Expectations; Create Conditions for Success; Hold the System Accountable to the Expectations; Build Collective Will; and Learn Together as a Board Team. The group discussed our current long-term goals. They are to 1) Improve Instruction and Student Learning 2) Enhance Culture and Climate, 3) Strengthen Communication. Superintendent Gochenour discussed the need of indicators to measure and the need to have over-all board goals which will line up with the Superintendent goals and the goals of the Principals. Lou had the board and administration break out into small groups to discuss current goals and create our future goals while discussing a means to measure the goals. The small groups came together at the end of the meeting. The collaboration was a success. The Board set the direction for our future goals. Superintended Gochenour and her administration team will work together during the next month or two to bring goals and indicators of success to the board. ADJOURNMENT The next Regular Board meeting is scheduled for Monday, September 12, to begin at 6:00 P.M. Director Myler made a motion to adjourn the meeting, and Director Barnard seconded.
